Transformers are rated in watts, and a system loaded to its limit on install day has nowhere to grow. We size with headroom so fixtures can be added when landscaping matures or a patio gets built, without replacing the transformer.

Wire gauge is the other thing worth getting right. Long runs on undersized wire lose voltage, and the fixtures at the end of the line dim noticeably compared to the ones near the transformer.
